Smoking Cessation

Pain Center New JerseyWhat is Auriculotherapy?

Auriculotherapy is a form of acupuncture using a needle-less stimulation of the external ear for alleviating pain and dysfunction in other parts of the body.

Auriculotherapy for Smoking Cessation and How It Works

With people becoming more health conscious about the risks of cigarette smoking, auriculotherapy has become increasingly popular. Auriculotherapy tricks the body into thinking it is still receiving nicotine even though it is not. The procedure stimulates natural chemicals called "endorphins". The brain has specific neuroreceptors that nicotine binds to when it is ingested. Manipulating these receptors by auriculotherapy allows us to lock the endorphins in to trick the body into thinking nicotine is still there. This will last for 1-2 weeks, possibly longer, without exposure to nicotine the body will slowly lose its addictive neurological pathway. After this, the body will no longer crave the substance and auriculotherapy allows you the time for this to happen.

What to Expect

The doctor will be running a small microcurrent device around your ear and you may hear a quiet, high pitched noise coming from the stimulator while it searches for the most accurate point. As the doctor treats the active reflex point you may feel a sensation of a pulse or a pin prick lasting about 30-60 seconds. It is a painless treatment typically requiring only one visit. 4 out of 5 patients quit with only one treatment, others may need a follow up treatment if severe cravings come back to get over the addiction. You must WANT to quit smoking for auriculotherapy to be effective. Auriculotherapy desensitizes the neuroreceptors that nicotine binds to and if any nicotine is ingested after treatment, the addiction will begin to re-establish itself and slowly turn these receptors back on. This means NO cigarettes, cigars, patches, gums or inhalers. Auriculotherapy is a painless alternative to ear acupuncture but is contraindicated in patients who are pregnant and for those who have certain types of pacemakers. The only side effects are tenderness or inflammation to the ear itself which is usually very rare, especially if the doctor is using auriculotherapy with electrical stimulation.

1st visit $250 ~ follow up visits $125
